Friends and enemies among the planets

Natural relationships and why they colour every reading.

Natural relationships

Classical texts give each planet natural friends, neutrals and enemies. The Sun counts the Moon, Mars and Jupiter as friends; Venus and Saturn as enemies. Saturn befriends Mercury and Venus.

Temporary relationships

In a specific chart, planets placed in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from each other become temporary friends. Combining the two gives the five-fold (panchadha) relationship — from great friend to great enemy.

Why it matters

A planet in a friend’s sign works comfortably; in an enemy’s sign it must work harder. In our interactive chart, hover any planet to see its friends outlined in blue and enemies dashed in orange.
